2014 onakai national championships

A squad of fourteen IKKU members attended the recent O.N.A.K.A.I. Senior Championships in Tallaght. The squad completely dominated the medal league total, taking home an impressive fourteen medals. The IKKU now have no less than five O.N.A.K.A.I. All Ireland Champions in their ranks for 2014.

First up, Cork's Rachel Early took Silver in the -61 kg Category, but went one step better to take Gold in the Ladies Open. This was at the expense of Navan's Jennifer Byrne, who took home Silver. Navan's Justyne Collins took Silver in the +61 kg Category, narrowly losing out by Hantei in the final.

In the most competitive and biggest category by far, Male 14/15 yrs, Navan dominated proceedings as usual. The Navan crew swept the boards to take Gold (Ruadhri Collins), Silver (Jordan Pender) and Bronze (Adam Durning). In the Male 16/17 yrs section, Finglas's Evan Mc Glynn took home bronze, losing out to a very experienced fighter.

In the Mens -67kg Category, Aaron Mc Laughlin put on a fantastic display to take the title. Aaron was fighting in a higher weight category than his own, but this was no obstacle. He was also awarded the Christopher Nugent Memorial Trophy, for the second time.

As expected, Ronan Flynn -84 kg and Gordon Smith +85kg won their respective titles with style.

Then in a "Clash of The Titans" match up, both fighters faced off in the Mens Open Weight decider. This bout was the highlight of the day, finishing at nine points each at time. Hantei went to Ronan Flynn, who was crowned Mens Open Weight Champion for 2014. However there most certainly was no loser in this case.

Other squad members who put in spirited performances were Cork's Blaithin Casey and Larkhill's Katerina Susko and Matthew Martin.

Speaking after the event, IKKU Chief Instructor Paul Brennnan remarked "The whole squad performed really well today. They have been putting in the hours over the last few months, and today have got their well deserved rewards. But It's back to training tomorrow night, next stop The Europeans in May".
